It's atcually impossible to own two running subarus. Just as I got the saabaru running last weekend this happened. I heard a noise at idle and figured I was going to get it fixed and diagnosed during my next oil change. Timing belt idler pulley broke 40 miles from my house. Well, atleast the tow driver was sympathetic. I'll still be making it to the Chicago autoshow tomorrow if anyone else will be there. Sometimes I wonder why I even look at new subarus...

look at the bright side , it's not head gaskets.

G0od god man, sorry for the bad luck. I mean other than the head gasket issues, they're usually bulletproof. I'm in the current debate myself about a new Subaru (WRX), though the debate isn't really that vs. something else and more that vs. trying to rebuild my savings after burning it all on the down payment for my first house last spring. I could sell the BMW.... Yeah, never mind haha.
Reminds me I have to see to this same thing on my Saabaru come the spring...

It sucks and it was a gates timing belt kit with 40k miles on it. Oh well, I only am going to lose a couple of days and a couple of dollars, it could be worse. Just pay attention to any noise during idle. I was going to repair it next oil change, but in hindsight I should have done it sooner. I'm pretty sure I'll end up with a new wrx or sti soon, if I don't follow taverish's advice.

The new Subarus don't have timing belts, so there's that. The older Subarus are the most reliable. I have a '91 Loyale with 211k miles on it, and it's the most drama free car I own.

It's just bad luck on my part. It's been good so far and I think all the valves are good. They're so much better to drive then the same year Honda or Toyota, so I'll sacrifice some reliably. That and I've gotten a motor pull to less then two hours.
